Mr. Triplett’s 7th and 8th grade Advanced Art students drew inspiration from artist Claes Oldenburg to create their own “larger-than-life” sculptures. Students began the project by selecting an everyday object of their choice. They then carefully measured each part of their object and applied their math skills to scale those measurements up while maintaining correct proportions. Each sculpture was required to be at least 12 inches tall.

Once measurements were complete, students used tape, wire, newspaper, and cardboard to construct their sculptures. One important requirement was that each piece had to “defy gravity,” meaning the object could not simply sit or lay the way it normally would. After construction, students reinforced their sculptures with paper strips and glue.

The final step was painting the sculptures with acrylic paint to match the colors of their chosen objects. The finished pieces turned out beautifully and are now proudly displayed in the middle school library!
