The Patriots Pen Essay Contest is an annual, nationwide competition sponsored by the National VFW. Students begin by competing at the local level and may advance to the District, State, and National levels. Teachers who are nominated also advance through the competition at the same levels. Each year, the National VFW releases a new theme and guiding question for students in grades 6–8 to respond to in a 300–400 word essay.
Students in Mrs. DelToro’s classroom have participated in the Patriots Pen competition since 2018 during the first quarter of the school year. Over the years, many students have earned recognition at the local level, and just last year, one student advanced to the District level.
Mrs. DelToro continues to include this contest in her curriculum because of the strong emphasis it places on citizenship, U.S. history, and civic responsibility. The project also helps students develop essential academic skills, including brainstorming, research, and essay writing. Additionally, this format mirrors the presentation style students may choose to use for their HGSS State Assessment Project during the third quarter, making it a valuable learning experience across multiple areas.
